DONT BE A SUCKER FOR FRAUDULENT DIRECT-MAIL PHYSIQUE PHOTO OFFERS.

In spite of everything done to stop them, some of the greedy boys continue to send out misleading sales pitches planned to make the customer think he will get something that he wont get. And the amazing thing is that no matter what we say here, a number of people who read this will be bilked again and again.

You may have received one of those "personal letters" from the "get-rich-quick" boys telling you that they had some "real special pictures" for just a few "intimate friends"-but to hurry before such-and-such a date before they presumably had to get out of town. While the letters do not come right out and say they are sending obscene material, the subtle wording encourages you to draw that conclusion. Another gimmick is an extra high price such as "$10 for 12 4x5 prints" which when you compare to a typical physique offering of $3 for 12 4x5s, causes the reaction: "These must be something special or they wouldnt charge so much." Some "suckers" quit after being burned once, others keep on reordering hoping to become a "trusted"customer".

A photographer or model selling illegal material wont last in business more than a few weeks before the government gets wind of him. Every mailing list is peppered with postal inspectors and their collaborators. Technically, the fraudulent photo offer is illegal too, but fraud is often difficult to prove except in its most brazen form. This article is meant in no way to reflect upon the many legitimate studios and individ-

uals who offer physique material by mail--who depend on satisfied customers who consistently reorder. But beware of the "clandestine letter" which purports to help you break the law. Let us know of your bad experiences; your confidence will be maintained, but other customers will be warned.

PHOTOGRAPHER SELLING NUDE PHOTOGRAPHS ARRESTED BY SANTA MONICA CALIFORNIA POLICE. A short time ago an out-of-town physique photographer sent personal letters to about 15 "tried and true" customers in the Los Angeles area, telling them he would be in their town on a certain date and he would phone them to tell them where they could meet him to purchase completely nude photographs. He was extremely cautious and told no one of his whereabouts or plans, and only the 15 knew his hotel address. Just as he was ready to leave for his home city, the inevitable raid by the Santa Monica vice squad occurred. He was told that every move he had made had been watched from the moment he landed at LA International Airport, and the police gave him a list of the places he had visited. In his own home town police were alerted and his entire stock of merchandise was confiscated. To avoid prosecuting their stooge or involving him, the simple charge was "Possession of Lewd Photographs"

This is our answer to those who feel we should shut up talking about "unfair laws" and sneak around offering nudes undercover. AMG doesn't take nudes and as far as we know, none of the photographers represented in PP take them. This is not to say that we consider them wrong or offensive in any way, but only that under present laws and misinterpretations of laws, they pose a difficult legal problem. When the sale of completely nude photos does become completely legal, we will be in the awkward position of having none available. But for that matter, we feel that very few physique poses would be improved by complete nudity, and on the other hand many models would be ruined as surely as talking pictures sounded the death knell for many a popular silent star screen. Any many nude studies are really aesthetically disenchanting, from an artistic view. But we feel the suitability or non-suitability of any photo, book, movie, etc. is up to the individual consumer to determine. No policeman, judge, preacher etc. has the right to force his interpretation on anyone else. But according to present law, stupid though it may be, the portraying of an attractive nude person is invariably called obscene in most localities and by some federal judges, (probably the immunity sometimes granted nudist publications is that the bodies portrayed are usually so unbeautiful as to preclude the lewd possibility that someone might gain erotic pleasure. Attempting to flaunt or circumvent the law invariably brings expense, unpleasantness, and often prison terms for all concerned. If you dont like the low, help fight to change it by joining anti-censorship groups like ACLU, American Sunbathing & Health, etc. They need you.
